My Interest in Narrative Therapy
- Written by Bridging Harts Staff
One of the types of therapy I’ve been interested in ever since my Theories in Psychotherapy course has been Narrative Therapy. Upon learning more about it, this creative approach felt like a perfect way for me to integrate my passion for storytelling, as narrative therapists believe that people’s lives are created and interpreted through stories whether they’re healthy or problematic.
Narrative therapy emphasizes the belief that our personal realities and self-images are not absolute but are created and maintained by societal and historical contexts. Knowing that a problematic story isn’t absolute, a narrative therapist’s job is to loosen rigid structures and change perceptions in order to facilitate a healthy, positive reauthoring of a client’s life.
I’ve recently completed my first round of training in narrative therapy (5 Day Narrative Therapy Practice Training) at the world-renowned Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy and will be taking my next round of training (Applied Skills of Narrative Practice) in May. I’ve already begun to implement techniques in sessions and can speak to how impactful this type of therapy can be. If you’d like to learn more and see if this is a potential route for your own therapy, please feel free to reach out or bring it up during our consultation. Thank you for reading and take care!
