Enneagram: What is it and what can you learn from yours?
- Written by Bridging Harts Staff
The Enneagram is comprised of 9 different numbers or “types”. Each of the nine personality types is defined by a particular core belief about how the world works. This core belief drives your deepest motivations and fears — and fundamentally shapes a person's worldview and the perspective through which they see the world and the people around them.
Our core beliefs are not necessarily incorrect, but they can be limiting and operate as “blinders” for people. Understanding our Enneagram type and how it colors our perceptions can help us to broaden our perspective and approach situations more effectively.
Not only does the Enneagram cover our core beliefs, but it also highlights our strengths and abilities.
I believe that the enneagram can offer a new lens through which you can witness your motivations, fears, and how you navigate the world. Deeper awareness and understanding of ourselves can be extremely helpful along our journeys of growth. I use the enneagram with my clients for a variety of reasons including—
- Deeper understanding of self and others
- Making sense of stress responses
- Making sense of changes that can occur during growth
- Uncovering self-care needs
- Exploring inner dialogue
- Dialoging about negative cognitions
- To highlight your strengths
To learn more about what your enneagram number may be, take the free test linked below:

One important thing to note is that no test can confirm your enneagram number for you. Only you know your deepest motivations and fears. These can be uncovered by processing your preliminary results (from the free test) with your therapist. I would love to help you along your journey of self exploration!
