Busy Mind Stress and Anxiety
- Written by Sherri Eubank, MA, LPC
Do you ever feel like you can’t stop thinking? Your mind keeps obsessing about something over and over. You might not be able to go to sleep. You wake up in the middle of the night and can’t stop thinking. Maybe you keep rethinking a conversation and wish you’d said something different. You keep visualizing a fight with your significant other and replay it in your head. You have problems making decisions about which direction to go in life. You obsess about how you would like to makes changes for yourself in your life. You could also be thinking about COVID-19 too much and create more worries. Thinking about the same things over and over can cause anxiety to grow. Sometimes it can get so overwhelming that watching a movie or surfing social media is the only way to turn it off. All you know is that you can’t seem to find much calmness.
So take a couple of deep breaths and focus on your body. Start a body scan exercise at the tip of your toes that goes to the top of your head. Don’t try to change anything while scanning. Just be aware of your body and the physical sensations. It could be warmth or coolness, the feel of clothing touching your skin. Maybe a slight breeze is blowing across your body. Go slowly from your toes to your ankles. Again slowly up your legs. Use a strong focus as you move your body scanning to the next area. If you sense an area of tightness, take note, but continue without changing it. When you get to the top of your body, it can be repeated again if needed. This exercise moves you to the present moment where there is no worry about the past or the future. This is a form of mindfulness that can offer calmness during times of stress.
